HAL to Launch Commercial Production of SJ‑100 Aircraft in India by 2029 | aviationbizz.com
Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has announced that it plans to begin commercial manufacturing of the SuperJet 100 (SJ‑100) regional aircraft in India within the next three years — a major step in the company’s push into civil aviation and domestic aerospace manufacturing.
Speaking at the Wings India 2026 aviation event, HAL Chairman and Managing Director D.K. Sunil said the initiative marks a strategic shift from the company’s traditional defence‑focused portfolio toward a stronger presence in the civil aircraft sector. Once manufacturing begins, HAL also intends to lease up to 10 SJ‑100 aircraft to domestic carriers to help ease global aircraft supply bottlenecks and support India’s regional aviation growth.
The SJ‑100 is a twin‑engine regional jet developed by Russia’s United Aircraft Corporation, designed to carry around 90–100 passengers and operate on short‑ to medium‑haul routes — making it well‑suited to India’s expanding domestic and regional market. HAL estimates strong potential demand for the aircraft as Indian airlines expand connectivity to Tier‑2 and Tier‑3 cities.
This move also aligns with HAL’s broader goal of diversifying its business — the company is targeting around 10 % of its revenue from civil aviation over the next decade.
