The Saudi Air Navigation Services (SANS) has been recognised for its strong commitment to environmental responsibility by achieving Level 2 accreditation in CANSO’s environmental accreditation GreenATM programme.
Launched in 2022, CANSO’s GreenATM programme provides a global benchmark to assess and guide ANSPs in improving environmental performance through operational efficiency and sustainable practices. The programme consists of five levels, each representing deeper integration of environmental management into an organisation’s strategy, operations, and culture.
SANS’s Level 2 achievement reflects the organisation’s growing maturity in environmental management, driven by a leadership-led approach and the integration of sustainability into strategic planning and operational performance. The accreditation recognised particularly strong performance in the ‘Improved ATM’ category, demonstrating meaningful progress in airspace efficiency and emissions reduction.
The assessment recognised SANS’s ongoing efforts to support more sustainable air navigation operations through operational efficiency initiatives, enhanced airspace management, and continuous coordination with aviation stakeholders to optimise flight routes and reduce fuel consumption and emissions. This was further reinforced by targeted initiatives aimed at reducing aviation’s environmental impact, including airspace optimisation measures, capacity enhancement through advanced operational practices, and the adoption of innovative solutions that contribute to lowering emissions. SANS also demonstrated its commitment to environmental awareness and the integration of sustainability principles across both its operational and corporate practices.
With this foundation in place, SANS is well-positioned to build on its progress and advance toward Level 3 in the coming years.
