Temasek Backs Singapore Airlines’ Long-Term Air India Strategy | aviationbizz.com
Temasek, Singapore’s state investment company and the majority shareholder of Singapore Airlines, has expressed continued support for the airline’s investment in Air India, highlighting the long-term strategic potential of the partnership.
Singapore Airlines holds a 25.1% stake in Air India following the integration of Vistara with the Tata Group-owned airline in 2024. The partnership is viewed as an important part of Singapore Airlines’ strategy to expand its presence in India and strengthen its long-haul network.
Temasek believes Air India could play an important role in Singapore Airlines’ ambition to establish a second hub outside Singapore. India’s large and rapidly growing aviation market provides significant opportunities for expanding international connectivity and developing new long-haul services.
The investment comes as Air India continues its multi-year transformation under the Tata Group. The airline is undertaking major changes across its fleet, operations, customer experience and network as it works to build a stronger global aviation presence.
Temasek acknowledged that transforming an airline of Air India’s scale is a complex process that will require several years. The investor noted that progress may not always be linear, particularly because the aviation industry is influenced by factors such as aircraft innovation, fleet renewal cycles, fuel-price movements, geopolitical developments and airspace disruptions.
Singapore Airlines is also facing increased financial pressure from its investment in Air India. The group recently reported its first quarterly loss since 2022, with weaker performance at Air India and higher jet-fuel costs contributing to the result. Air India has also sought around $1.5 billion in additional equity from its owners to support its ongoing transformation.
Despite these challenges, Temasek said it remains supportive of Singapore Airlines’ long-term strategic decisions and believes initiatives aimed at strengthening global competitiveness are important for sustained growth.
The backing highlights the strategic importance of the Singapore Airlines–Air India partnership and its potential to reshape long-haul connectivity between India and international markets over the coming years.
